Fifth about The Seventh

Poison – Short (2023)

Poison: as Wes Anderson closes his (current? One can hope there may be another one in the future.) cycle of short film adaptations of stories by Roald Dahl, he again finds himself with an engaging story to go along with the aesthetics. It tells the tale of a man who finds a snake in his bed and needs the help of a friend and a doctor, and it is suspenseful to an unexpected degree. The story lends itself to the visual style used since the protagonist can barely move in the first place. The joint work of cinematographer Robert Yeoman and production designer Adam Stockhausen is absolutely fascinating: the camera moves through moving sets, with variable lighting. Dev Patel plays the narrator and friend of the protagonist, and his reading of the short story, at a mile-a-minute, is great to listen to, while his emoting to what he is reading, is equally so. Ben Kingsley plays the doctor with empathy and dignity. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the trapped man, with minimal movement and use of voice, in an outstanding piece of acting.
