Fifth about The Seventh

Delicatessen

Delicatessen: Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s film is a sort of post-apocalyptic fairytale, set in an alternate Paris with serious food shortage where a former clown moves into a community of cannibals. Despite its starting point, the film finds unexpected sweetness in its naive and agreeable protagonist and a colourful group of supporting characters. Dominique Pinon, as the clown, is charming, in addition to having a very distinctive face. Jean-Claude Dreyfus and Chick Ortega play the main antagonists with the proper level of sinisterness. Marie-Laure Dougnac and Karin Viard are at the other end of the spectrum, two lovely humane presences, not accidentally each in one of the cuter scenes of the film. Caro, who doubles down as production designer, creates a world visually impressive and nightmarish, but not devoid of humanity and warmth. Cinematographer Darius Khondji accentuates that with his remarkable work, filled with expressive lensing, framing, and lightning. The music, by composer Carlos D’Alessio, is another important element of the storytelling.
