The Rat Catcher – Short

The Rat Catcher: if the story adapted by Wes Anderson from Roald Dahl’s short story is not the most interesting, it is fascinating to see how a director with such visual flair can still fully display his love for the written word. The short follows two men as they deal with a rodent catcher, and it is a tad disturbing and disgusting. Aesthetically, the film mixes somewhat abstract visuals with a rapid-fire reading of the short story, seemingly in its entirety. The performances also belong in the realm of the somewhat abstract, with the cast often looking at and talking directly to the camera. Richard Ayoade plays the narrator and one of the two men who interact with the title character, and his reading is effective and precise. Rupert Friend plays the other man, also well. But the short film belongs to Ralph Fiennes, who plays the awkward and disturbing man with great use of physicality and a good help from the make-up and hairstyling team. As usual, Cinematographer Robert Yeoman and production designer Adam Stockhausen contribute to creating such a distinctive work.
