Fifth about The Seventh

In the Aisles (In den Gängen)

In the Aisles: this quiet and delicate drama, by Thomas Stuber, observes a young man as he starts working in a supermarket and the relationships he develops there, particularly with his mentor and a married co-worker. The film moves slowly, but it’s constantly engaging since the three central characters are very well-defended by the cast. Franz Rogowski, who probably has one of the most exciting faces in cinema nowadays, is excellent as the young man who clearly has more to him than his quiet demeanor suggests. Peter Kurth, as the older man who embraces the protagonist as his protégé, is very good. Sandra Hüller plays the woman who works in another aisle that catches his eye; she projects gentle mischievousness rather well. Cinematographer Peter Matjasko creates a great sense of solitude in the supermarket, by the way he frames the impossibly long and tall aisles. Editor Kaya Inan gives the film a ponderous but never dull pace.
