Fifth about The Seventh

Lovers of the Arctic Circle (Los Amantes del Círculo Polar)

Lovers of the Arctic Circle: it is a mesmerizing and unusual love story that is told by Julio Medem. Jumping between point-of-views for each of the two protagonists, the narrative, always poetic, is easy to follow and even easier to engage emotionally with. All three iterations of the couple (at around 8 years old, 16 years old, and 25 years old) are charming, even if it’s not easy to see one group aging into the other. Small complaint to make as the performers playing Ana (Sara Valiente, Kristel Díaz, and Najwa Nimri) and Otto (Peru Medem, Víctor Hugo Oliveira, and Fele Martínez) are all excellent. The camerawork of cinematographer Gonzalo F. Berridi gives the film its oniric feel, Iván Aledo’s editing very elegantly jumps from one character to another, and composer Alberto Iglesias’ musical score is romantic and moody.
