Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words: the issue with Stig Björkman’s documentary about Ingrid Bergman is not access: using home videos and photos since her childhood, extensive use to her own thoughts from her diaries and correspondence with friends, interviews she gave through the years and conversation with her families, the trove of material is large. But, either due to selection or self-control by her, her words (therefore the documentary as a whole) are factually informative but just mildly insightful. In any case, Ms. Bergman was an accomplished artist who lived a full and rich life, so even a limited look at her life results in an interesting film. Editor Dominika Daubenbüchel mixes the images, interviews, and letters (read by Alicia Vikander) in a very conventional but effective way. The musical score, by Michael Nyman, is beautiful.
