The 72nd Annual WGA Awards will be handed Sunday, February 1st, 2020.
As I have been doing for a few years, as we get into the awards season, I’ll post the fictional ballots for some of the guild awards, showing what my vote would be if I had one. I will, as a rule, abstain from my fictional vote if I haven’t seen at least half of the nominees. And to be perfectly clear, I’m not a member of any of these guilds and organizations.
The list of nominees can be seen here.
Here it goes:
Documentary Screenplay: abstain (Not seen: Citizen K, Foster, The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People, The Kingmaker.)
Original Screenplay: Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won, for Parasite
This film is trying so many different things at once it is a wonder it succeeds so much, retaining such tightness in the storytelling, and being this entertaining.
Adapted Screenplay: Greta Gerwig, for Little Women
Retelling a story told already many times, Gerwig chose to give it a modern paint by scrambling the chronological order. She achieved much: enhanced the emotional punch of the story, keeping the characters distinct and lovable. (Not seen: Jojo Rabbit.)
