Fifth about The Seventh

Maniac (2018)

Maniac: Patrick Somerville and Cary Joji Fukunaga’s series can be, moment to moment, very weird both in tone and plot, but the whole ultimately lands beautifully, in a very coherent package. There may be an excess of hand-holding and exposition, but the episodes are all very entertaining, and the story, very touching. Jonah Hill is not the best choice to play such a morose (group of) characters, but he finds his footing here and there (in some of the more comedic and absurd moments, he nails unsurprisingly his performance); Emma Stone, by the other hand, is always very good, in the whole range of her multitude of characters and emotions; Sonoya Mizuno and Justin Theroux’s performances are very fine, but given in a very particular low-key comedic tone. The episodes are visually varied, more often than not very trippy and colorful (very cool production design by Alex DiGerlando), well-captured by series cinematographer Darren Lew.
