Fifth about The Seventh

Cloak and Dagger (1946)

Cloak and Dagger: a good, efficient thriller by Fritz Lang, from a time when the enemy was absolute, and the stakes, very clear. The story has some interesting elements thrown in, but for the most part it’s rather run-of-the-mill, with some romance added to the spy game. The film moves between exciting beats very easily, organically. Gary Cooper is fine as the straight-arrow, smart and noble protagonist that is a little bit over his head, even if the role doesn’t really call for much; Lilli Palmer is also a good presence, projecting well how tough, capable and attractive her character is. Christian Nyby’s editing keeps the snappy pace, and cinematographer Sol Polito’s camerawork is unobstrusive.
