Double Lover: François Ozon tried a little bit of everything in this suspense, going from mistaken identity drama to erotic thriller to Grand Guignol and back. A cold, bland protagonist makes it hard to bother too much to unravel, particularly when it becomes clear the film is heading towards a very particular and over-used trope (one that needs a better execution to work well). Marine Vacth’s gamine look is a very solid choice, and she both looks great and projects well the character’s vulnerability. Jérémie Renier creates two characters which are distinguishable. It can get heavy-handed at times, but the film remains visually interesting with the repeated use of (thematically relevant) mirrored images and juxtapositions; good work by director of photography Manuel Dacosse.
