Fifth about The Seventh

The Square (2017)

The Square: Ruben Östlund’s dramedy mixes two subject matters that don’t match all that well, using as common thread the central character; it’s a pity, as each half could be interesting on its own, but the sum makes the whole shallower and more pretentious (which, incidentally, could be by design, but such self-reference doesn’t make it more engaging to watch), but the dry sense of humour helps. Claes Bang creates a slippery, charming, empty self-centered rascal, and his performance is very convincing; Elisabeth Moss is fine in her limited role (mostly as a device to showcase the protagonist’s many shortcomings). The film has a cold, efficient, polished look and, in spite of everything, flows well.
