Fifth about The Seventh

They Live by Night

They Live by Night: Nicholas Ray’s low-key tale of star-crossed lovers is tight, fast-moving, efficient; by the other hand, the pace and the nature of the characters don’t allow for the relationship to flourish in a way that makes it fully relatable and touching. None of that is the fault of the cast, which is in good shape: Cathy O’Donnell and Farley Granger are fine in their roles as the couple and look good together, and Howard Da Silva and Jay C. Flippen are convincingly threatening and tough-looking. The camerawork of George E. Diskant may be the highlight here, dynamic but also intimate when called for.
