Just Like Our Parents: the turmoil at the center of Laís Bodanzky’s protagonist’s life may seem excessive, but then again real life sometimes likes to throw a knuckleball or two. The resulting drama is touching and believable, in great part due to Maria Ribeiro’s performance: creating a character that is not fully likable but perfectly comprehended and therefore, emotionally engaging. The rest of the cast is uneven: Jorge Mautner’s aloof performance strikes a wrong chord, Clarisse Abujamra is somewhat cold, while the other members are fine. Director of photography Pedro J. Márquez manages a bit of a richer visual identity than the average family drama with some off-kilter framing.
