The Beguiled: Sofia Coppola’s slow, ponderous character study is low on action and story, but has a tight narrative and lots of mood, even if it results somewhat cold at the end. Given the short run time, there’s not much character transformation, but each character is clearly defined. Acting is strong across the board; the performances are homogeneously subdued and effective; Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and particularly Elle Fanning deserve their spots on the poster, as does Colin Farrell. It’s a beautiful location, well-used to increase the sense of isolation called for the story. Coppola and director of photography Philippe Le Sourd are unafraid to shoot it naturalistically dark in the interior scenes, and manage to find beautifully composed frames often.
