Colossal: director Nacho Vigalondo finds a very peculiar and unique story to deal with the themes of this film; the result is somewhat weird, but also entertaining, touching and uplifting. So much of this movie depends on the cast delivering, and both Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis do their parts and have very interesting performances; Sudeikis plays really well the tough transition of his character, and Hathaway is charmingly un-charming, clever and messed up. The special effects are appropriately cheesy and used sparingly. Eric Kress’ cinematography is generally simple and serviceable, but he finds a few frames that are a great match to the theme at hand.
