Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales: this franchise entry directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg has a very busy plot, full of heroes, anti-heroes, villains and sub-villains with conflicting agendas. It nevertheless manages to entertain and to have some heart, even if the young central couple, Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites, is as inexpressive as it is attractive. The more veteran cast-members (Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Javier Bardem) fare better (the first two, of course, have their roles down pat by now). The design and execution of the special effects (in particular character design and the setting of the climatic sequence), are visually very engaging; however, much of it plays in murky, dark scenes, which makes the action hard to follow and subtracts from the overall experience.
