20th Century Women: Mike Mills’ delicate film doesn’t really tell a story, but simply takes a very caring look at the lives and relationships of a quintet of characters; the result is, in turns, touching, funny and heartbreaking, much like life can be. The cast is in fine shape: Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig (surprisingly) and Billy Crudup are solid, but it’s Annette Bening that is truly in very strong form here, balancing the many tones the film asks for masterly. Technically, it’s a simple but effective work: in particular, the editing of Leslie Jones, which mixes images from many sources, and the liberal use of voice-overs, raise the whole, making this an intriguing experience.
