The Unknown Girl: Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne find a different framework to tell a story that clearly belongs to their body of work (there is great humanity in the dry way the reality is portrayed); the mix with what essentially a mystery film is an intriguing choice, but also one that feels somewhat artificial. The main character is a cypher, as there’s very little information about her, but her obsession (the motor of the film) makes sense. Adèle Haenel’s acting is naturalistic, restrained, matching the character well; the rest of the cast is, likewise, subdued. The film is crafted simply but nicely, to serve the story and the character interactions: that goes for Alain Marcoen’s camera and Marie-Hélène Dozo’s editing.
