The 23rd Annual SAG Awards will be handed on Sunday, January 29th, 2017.
As I have been doing for a few years, as we get into the awards season, I’ll post the fictional ballots for some of the guild awards, showing what my vote would be if I had one. I will, as a rule, abstain from my fictional vote if I haven’t seen at least half of the nominees. And to be perfectly clear, I’m not a member of any of these guilds and organizations.
The list of nominees can be seen here.
Here it goes:
Best Stunt Ensemble: Hacksaw Ridge
The battle sequences have plenty of pretty impressive, and somewhat “realistic”, stunt work. Also, this is stunt work serving the story, not in lieu of one.
Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role: abstain (Not the seen the nominated performances of Viola Davis, Naomie Harris, Nicole Kidman and Octavia Spencer.)
Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role: abstain (Not the seen the nominated performances of Mahershala Ali, Jeff Bridges, Dev Patel.)
Best Female Actor in a Leading Role: Amy Adams (Louise Banks in Arrival)
Amy Adams projects the intelligence required by the character’s profession and the wonder of being in that situation perfectly; Arrival would not exist if not for this performance. (Not seen the nominated performance of Natalie Portman.)
Best Male Actor in a Leading Role: Casey Affleck (Lee Chandler in Manchester by the Sea)
Casey Affleck is all quiet, low-key intensity in this role; his eyes display all the sadness and misery that his character feels. (Not seen the nominated performance of Denzel Washington.)
Best Cast: abstain (Not seen Fences, Hidden Figures, and Moonlight.)
