As I Open My Eyes: Leyla Bouzid tells a story that, at first glance, could take place anywhere and almost at any recent period of time; however, as the film evolves, the specifics are slowly but surely incorporated, making the experience richer, more interesting and engaging. One element that makes this different from the get-go is the music, which has a very distinct flavor and politically charged lyrics; the songs tell a lot about the environment the film takes place, in and are the highlight of this film. Baya Medhaffer as the central character is merely OK (she can pout and sings well, but does not display much range beyond that); Ghalia Benali fares better. The film has a simple, effective, but somewhat generic look.
