The Revenant: there’s no denying that Alejandro G. Iñárritu has a clear vision about how to tell this story and that he sticks to it; likewise, that the images captured by the camerawork of Emmanuel Lubezki are exceptionally beautiful (as well as that the complexity of the choreography between camera and cast is enormous). However, the story is somewhat commonplace and the characters, uninteresting; the film’s pace ends up dragging because of it. Alva Noto and Ryûichi Sakamoto’s pretty but sedating score adds to that. The acting (Leonardo DiCaprio, in particular, but also Tom Hardy) is intense, high-quality.
