Mistress America: Noah Baumbach’s film is a stilted, pompous and barely bearable affair. The starting point is common enough, but the dialogue is unfunny and the gallery of characters, unbelievable, unpleasant and hard to care about. Acting is indifferent at best; Lola Kirke basically channels Great Gerwig, who is insufferable here as ever. Sam Levy’s images are serviceable, but they are not supposed to be more than that.
