Best Cinematography in a Theatrical Release: Emmanuel Lubezki for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
Lubezki’s work in Birdman is impressive not only because of the intense difficulty of the camera movements, but how beautifully lit each and every one of those shots are. This is a technically superlative work, but it’s not gratuitous; it’s aligned with the intent of the story. (Robert Yeoman’s meticulous work in The Grand Budapest Hotel is also a beauty.)
