Big Eyes: Tim Burton’s film tells a peculiar story (the sort of biopic that Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski usually write); its strangeness, however, results in a film that doesn’t have a set tone. Part of the issue comes from the acting; while Amy Adams plays her character sorrowfully (and adequately), Christoph Waltz (and, to a lesser extent, Terence Stamp) plays it too broadly and unconvincingly. This mix of drama and comedy doesn’t serve the story’s absurdity too well. Bruno Delbonnel’s images are colorful and bubbly, but that adds a sense of fantasy that doesn’t match all that well with the other genres at play.
Precise comment!

Feel for Amy for missing out on Oscar nom despite winning the golden globe

Amy Adams was fine (she usually is), but I don’t think she was better than any of the nominated actresses.
