Mr. Hulot’s Holiday: Jacques Tati’s masterpiece is the near-perfect combination of comedy and melancholy. The comedy is the result of well-planned and executed visual gags (much enriched by the sound design); it’s delicate, and rewards attention and patience. Even more rewarding, however, is the other side of the coin: the great character played by Tati himself (the physicality of the character is one of the most recognizable ever, and far from gratuitous), and particularly the relationship with the diverse gallery, makes this film as touching as it is funny. Beautifully shot by Jacques Mercanton and Jean Mousselle, nice score by Alain Romans.
