Night Train to Munich: clearly the product of another era, more naïve and steadfast (but by all acounts, accurate to its time and place). It’s an ingenious story, well and simply told, with enough charm from its principal players.

Safe House: nothing new here. Not the standard story, the editing style, Denzel Washington in full villainous mode, the car chases or the roof chases. Reasonably well-done for what it is, thought.

The Girl With the Dragon Tatto: the film somehow rises above the pedestrian, pulpy plot. The reason, of course, is the focus that is given to the title character, played marvelously here. While there are examples of great movies out of bad books, this is not one of them; but the courage to show what drives the character gives it points. Great craft at work.

Point Blank: competent thriller that, by one hand, doesn’t bring anything new to the table, but what it does, it does well. The idea of the wrong man being in pursuit has been around forever; but let’s not undervalue a good execution. Many good ideas have been mangled by uncapable hands.

The Lincoln Lawyer: certainly better than it appears to be, even if this seems a backhanded compliment. It’s not much of a mystery, indeed it’s nothing much new at all, a classical defense lawyer type of story. It entertains, but it flies away from your mind as soon as it’s over.

Dangerous Moves: it’s interesting as it’s something somewhat unique, a chess-thriller. One does not have to know the game to follow all the plot’s gambits, sacrifices, attacks and counterattacks, but it sure helps. The movie does lack, however, a bit more of character. We know them in broad brushes, but something else would have made this better.
