5 Against the House

5 Against the House: it’s, Ok, I guess. But if it’s a film noir, I’m a Native American. It’s more like a mixture of a lot of things. It barely works, but I’ve seen worse.

Night and the City: oh, gosh, brilliant. I can’t recall many movies where the protagonist is so hateful, so twisted, like Harry Fabian. It’s great there is so little moral ambiguity about this one. And it’s so nice to look at, too. Yes, I can say I loved it.

Criss Cross: decent noir. I’m always amazed at how much screen presence Burt Lancaster had. I liked the ending, too. Certainly not great, but well worth the watch.

The Woman in the Window: very strong noir. Good story. It may sound the easy way out nowadays, but back when it was made, it was more of a novelty. Robinson is pretty good, as a non-gangster for a change, and the camera movements are sweet!

Brick: I remember reading about this movie when it came out and wanting to see it. Well, I should have. Very solid: loved the dialogues, the story, (most of) the shots. Very Hammett-ian indeed!

Black Angel: decent “noirish”. You can’t go much wrong with Peter Lorre, that’s for sure.

Kansas City Confidential: another neat noir, if a bit too round in some edges. Still, fun to watch.

Pickup on South Street: rough and tough noir. Who said a movie can’t be made with unsympathetic heroes, and well? And how could you go wrong with Thelma Ritter?
