Beginners: quite a nice little movie. Despite (or because of) its quirky structure and aesthetics (mostly the old, quiet songs), it has a sweetness and a sincerity that are hard to argue against. The cast, in particular Christopher Plummer, is quite strong.

The Trip: hands down, this movie has the most hilarious moments of the year. As soon as both actors start making their impressions, it raises to another level. The quiet moments in between, while interesting as well, have a completely different feel to them. So, at the end, this movie has 2 halves, both satisfying on themselves, but that don’t quite match, leaving an uneven feeling to it. But still quite fun.

Midnight in Paris: a good showcase of the difference between originality and freshness. Not (quite) an original to Woody Allen, this is still fresh, funny, interesting things to say and good acting all around. One can see why someone would fall in love with Marion Cotillard’s character, as well as with Paris. The dialogue sounds a bit too direct, didatic even, early on, but it goes away after a while. Good stuff.

Heaven Can Wait: there is a reason Ernst Lubitsch has a touch to his name, and while it may not be easy to explain, when one sees it one recognizes it. This is a great example of his wit and delicacy, and a great way to tell a story that may sound banal. The cast works perfectly, and it’s always a pleasure to see Charles Coburn working.

Rio: visually beautiful, the music is (for the most part) quite nice, but the story is disappointing. The stereotypes were not as bad as I expected, but as expected they were still there. In short, fun, but not to par with the best out there.

Sullivan’s Travels: not a great farce but a good one. This movie does it right both ways: it has great moments of dialogue, and great, extended periods of visual action without dialogue at all. While it may be a bit “self-preachy”, it’s not wrong about that idea.

Win Win: a pleasurable but unremarkable experience. With the exception of the sport chosen, which is somewhat unusual, there aren’t many risks taken here, as far as the story goes. The acting is solid, with Paul Giamatti being his usual great with a role that has more swetness and less bite than usual. It’s always a pleasure to watch him work.

My Man Godfrey: it works better as a social commentary and satire than as romantic comedy, since the romance (from one of the parties involved anyway) doesn’t really get shown. William Powell fits the part as a glove!
