Kung Fu Panda 2: looks beautiful (and, surprisingly, makes good use of 3D; it means a lot coming from me), but it doesn’t have the heart or the content to match that beauty. The characters are flat like a board, if one can even call them that. It’s not even all that funny.

Rio: visually beautiful, the music is (for the most part) quite nice, but the story is disappointing. The stereotypes were not as bad as I expected, but as expected they were still there. In short, fun, but not to par with the best out there.

Toy Story 3: whatever I said before stands. Still the best movie of 2010, upon a review. It hits the same notes, packs the same emotional punch and the characters remain as rich as they felt the first time. Megamind: it’s typical DW animation fare. Fun and completely forgettable. There’s nothing here, storywise or aestheticswise, to differentiate it from most of their other movies.

Rango: just to make it unequivocal, great! One has got to love the odd mix of (mostly) Leone’s “The Man with No Name” series, Chinatown, visual cues out of Star Wars, just to name a few of the more obvious things. The character design is different, risky and wonderful. The end result is an animated movie with brains, heart and soul, a rare presence in (US’) landscape today.

L’Illusionniste: a great proof that one can tell a story well with just good visuals and well-chosen music. One can actually see a lot of Jacques Tati here (Old x New, some very nice and low-key visual gags); a bit of Sylvain Chomet as well, with the peculiar physical types. I think it was a good choice to tone that down, it fits better the bitter-sweet story. Very very nice.

Tangled: if not for an interesting villain (not a strong villain, but the motivation was nice) and the beautiful (if a bit common) visuals, this would be even more pedestrian than it is. I had a nice time, but it doesn’t stand out in this day and age.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole: gorgeously looking film (Even if they abuse a bit of slow-mo. The director being who he is, it’s no surprise.) The story could be better, and there is a musical interlude that could be avoided, but it’s fun enough. The visuals alone are worth it.

Toy Story & Toy Story 2: seeing them together for the first time in many years. They remain great fun, and still resonate with me, thematically. And indeed, the way the arch is completed in Toy Story 3 makes me believe that this is one of the greatest trilogies of all time.
