Act of Valor: there is a reason actors are trained and paid to work: they are able to sell a story. The same thing with screenwriters, for that matter. The lack of either makes this film a bad rendition of a story that has been told time and time again, generally with more success.

21 Jump Street: a cardinal sin of a comedy, of course, is to not provoke any laughs, particularly if it doesn’t have much else going for it (a good story, for starters). This one gets very close to that particular sin, but it’s saved by a minor character. Barely.

This Means War: one should not be surprised when the trailers sell a movie that looks bad and the movie turns our to be exactly that. Part of the hurdle is that Reese Witherspoon is the most annoying screen presence this side of Renée Zellweger. There are (very) few moments that are funny, saving this from being a complete disaster.

Real Steel: it should not come as a surprise that a movie about fighting robots has little humanity to it, but the lack of earnestness in here is complete. The robots look good, thought.

Man on a Ledge: preposterous from beginning to end, this film embraces its B-movieness with gusto, in all major regards: screenplay (not much makes sense), acting (everybody is in sledgehammer mode). Some scenes are there for no reason at all.

Haywire: the most rewarding aspect is how straightforwards this film is. There’s no pretending it’s anything else: it’s an action movie centered in the fighting abilities of Gina Carano. She can throw a mean punch and kick, but not smile or read lines.

Contraband: a standard actioner. There is not character in sight at all, only cardboard models running around and doing criminal deeds. Nevertheless, it’s fun enough if you happen to forget your brain somewhere.

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi: a decent finish to the trilogy, despite the slow, unrelated start that doesn’t really add all that much to the story (but does add a lot to the general lore). One can see that, unlike the first film, which was an entity in itself, this and the the previous episode really should be seen as one. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol: while the plot gets a bit too 007-ish, it still retains enough of the spirit of the original material to be pleasurable. It may, in fact, have the set piece that mostly resembles the old TV series. The light tongue-in-cheek tone is also welcome.
