Iron Man Three

May 4, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Iron Man Three: an excessively busy story (having to contend with being a sequel to not one but two movies) with a lot of sound and fury, but not much else. The main selling point continues to be the main character (and, perhaps more importantly, how he’s played by Robert Downey Jr.) and how he doesn’t take anything seriously. In fact, the whole film doesn’t take itself too seriously, and this sense of humor is most welcome. Entertaining enough, if […]

The Avengers – Revisit

April 29, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Avengers: a review of this film only reassures what was thought before: this is a purely entertaining film. This is meant a bit as a backhanded compliment: there is nothing wrong in just trying to be fun (and this film is, in spades), but aiming somewhat higher is always welcome. Extremely well done, for what it’s supposed to be. The cast is very good in playing the one-noted characters; not having to spend much time introducing the characters, but […]

Desire (2013) – Full Short

April 26, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Desire is both a short and a Jaguar commercial. Fun nevertheless, very slick.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

April 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

G.I. Joe: Retaliation: to consider this based on the film’s story or character is beside the point; this is a gun porn (and sword porn) film and as such it must be judged. Here, as well, it fails enormously, as the action scenes are over-edited in such a way to make the action tiresome, uninteresting. There was a missed opportunity when it was decided that the light banter, by actors that can sell that, should be dropped; it would make […]

Gangster Squad

January 16, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Gangster Squad: consistently, the feeling that this has been done before comes from the trailers, and throughout the film, nothing shakes it away. It goes beyond the story (even thought that has also been told before). The end credits fan the longing for 1950’s LA more than the whole movie. However, despite the lack of originality and the excess of glitz and violence, it is somewhat entertaining. The cast is good looking, if uneven.

Skyfall

January 16, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Skyfall: by both mixing and dismissing old and new elements, the series circles back and gains in the process; it wisely keeps the vulnerability (to a degree of course; one can’t change the true nature of the character) seen in the last few entries. Visually, it steps away from the “Bourne” style, and of course with Roger Deakins lensing it, there are a number of great-looking shots. The villain created by Javier Bardem is great, and has a magnificent entrance. […]

The Man with the Iron Fists

January 15, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Man with the Iron Fists: not much in this film that was not done before, and probably better, by films that were already bad. The acting is flat, the dialogues are laughable, the story as well. The only purpose of this seems to be the extremely gruesome deaths; maybe that was the goal, but that doesn’t mean that if it aims to be bad and succeeds, that makes it any good.

Premium Rush

January 14, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Premium Rush: the film smartly moves fast enough, both forward and backward, to obscure that the story makes no sense whatsoever and that the only reason the characters exist is to keep moving. That was, obviously, to be expected. Nevertheless, it’s visually exhilarating, and Michael Shannon does a good job.

The Bourne Legacy

January 14, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Bourne Legacy: entertaining action film, if it doesn’t bother you that despite the different setup (that ties it nicely to the existing universe) and hero (a willing one, as opposed to an unwilling one), this is exactly the same as the first film. The good cast sells well the story; visually, this is not as powerful or engrossing as what Paul Greengrass showed us before.
