Fifth about The Seventh

Drenched in Blood (Barba Ensopada de Sangue)

Drenched in Blood: Aly Muritiba’s moody thriller follows a young man who, after his father’s death, moves to a small fishing village to discover the truth behind his grandfather’s death. There, he finds out how truly complex his family’s story is. Director of photography Inti Briones often shoots the scenes with an observant camera in a single take (the film was edited by Karen Akerman, who gives the film a nice pace), which gives the performers the space to perform and the tension to rise. Gabriel Leone plays the protagonist, a reserved man whose obsession with the truth puts him in a hard situation; it’s a nice, convincing performance. Thainá Duarte, as a young local woman he befriends, shows quite a good presence. The sound design, by Daniel Turini, Fernando Henna, and Henrique Chiurciu, is quite evocative and instrumental to creating the film’s mood.
