Velhos Bandidos: Cláudio Torres’ entertaining heist comedy is pure popcorn, and never pretends to be anything else. Two small-time crooks invade the house of an elderly couple to commit a burglary, but are caught in the act and forced to participate in a much larger heist. The comedy comes from the relationship between the two pairs and their constant need to double-cross the other couple. Bruna Marquezine and Vladimir Brichta are charming and efficient as the younger pair, but they are overmatched (and they know it) by Fernanda Montenegro and Ary Fontoura, who play the classy, long-loving elder couple. The supporting cast is equally fine. Editor Isadora Boschiroli drinks from the genre fountain to give the film a rather nice pace, always fun and never overextending its welcome. The film’s sound mix falters at times, drowning, on occasion, the dialogue beneath the sound effects and the (generally fine) music.
