The Mastermind: Kelly Reichardt’s take on a heist film follows a man, a bit of a lost soul, despite his marriage with two kids and two rich parents, as he concocts and executes what he thinks is a flawless plan to steal some art from a sleepy museum. This is a very easy-paced film, however, without great emotional highs or lows, therefore not for all tastes. Josh O’Connor plays the protagonist, a failed professional with notions; his sloppy posture and timid vocal projection say a lot about his mindset. The supporting cast is filled with great faces, all giving nice performances. Cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt, costume designer Amy Roth, and production designer Anthony Gasparro give the film a very strong sense of the period it’s set in. Composer Rob Mazurek’s jazzy score is an absolute delight and a perfect fit for the material.
