Fifth about The Seventh

Eleanor the Great

Eleanor the Great: this very emotional Scarlett Johansson’s dramedy (in her directorial debut) follows an old lady who, after losing her best friend, moves back to New York City; there, a misunderstanding and a white lie put her close to a journalism student, also dealing with her own grief. Their relationship is quite touching, more so given the circumstances that made it happen. June Squibb gives one of this year’s best performances as the irrepressible protagonist, a lovely and lively but occasionally acid woman. Erin Kellyman is a fine companion to her, as the hurt but genuinely interested young woman. Chiwetel Ejiofor has one beautiful scene as the young woman’s father. Cinematographer Hélène Louvart shoots this beautifully, giving warmth to the images. Composer Dustin O’Halloran contributes with a fine musical score.
