Is This Thing On?: the protagonists of Bradley Cooper’s drama are not quite sure of what they want, or at least it seems that way. A long-married couple with two sons, they are unhappy in their union and decide to have a friendly divorce. As a result, they explore the new space they conquer, finding new passions (or rekindling old ones). The main issue is that we are mostly told about their conflict rather than shown it. Also, the stand-up comedy bits are dull (and not particularly insightful), so his choice of path doesn’t sound all that convincing. Laura Dern and Will Arnett give solid, naturalistic performances, she as a competitive, serious woman, and he as a man struggling to find his way. Cooper plays a friend of the couple, a stoner who feels completely out of place in the film. Director of photography Matthew Libatique keeps the camera (very) close to his subjects, but the handheld choice doesn’t feel justified by the material.
