Fifth about The Seventh

Tale of Cinema (Geukjangjeon)

Tale of Cinema: HONG Sang-soo’s easygoing, modest drama tells the story of a young, aimless man who meets an old school flame, and together they consider ending their lives. Much lighter in tone than this blurb suggests, this film is about regrets and unrequited love. UHM Ji-won plays the young woman quite beautifully, in a tricky, multi-faceted, and delicate role. LEE Ki-woo plays the aimless man with a good (and proper, for the role) degree of apathy. KIM Sang-kyung plays another man whom the girl meets, and he is likewise passionless, in another effective performance. Editor HAHM Sung-won gives the film an easy, quick pace that serves the story well. Composer JEONG Yong-jin’s lovely musical score betrays, from the first chords, that the film is a light affair.
