Fifth about The Seventh

The Voice of Hind Rajab (Sawt Hind Rajab)

The Voice of Hind Rajab: Kaouther Ben Hania’s recreation of the dramatic afternoon during which the Red Crescent receives an emergency call from a young girl stuck in a car near an Israeli army operation in Gaza is gut-wrenching, touching, maddening. But that comes from the story itself more than from the film; perhaps because the story moves towards a known fait accompli ending, or perhaps because the film bends backwards to show how closely it sticks to the actual events. The decision to use the actual recordings gives the film an emotional urgency, but the use of some video recordings is distracting and adds nothing to the drama. The performances are emotional, raw. Saja Kilani plays one of the dispatchers with great effectiveness, the sadness and worry quite evident. Motaz Malhees, playing the responder who first got the call, is all nervousness and anger over the lack of a proper response. Cinematographer Juan Sarmiento G. keeps the camera close to the performers, enhancing the urgency. An important story, but deserving of a more engaging execution.
