Fifth about The Seventh

Following (1999)

Following: Christopher Nolan’s modest neo-noir follows a bored, unemployed man who takes a liking to shadowing random people, until he meets a small-time burglar and gets mixed up in more than he wishes for. Its non-linear structure reveals what’s really going on slowly, while at the same time hiding how basic the story truly is. The characters are likewise truly superficial. Jeremy Theobald plays the protagonist, a pure cypher, convincingly; Alex Haw plays the burglar with the proper amount of sleaze; Lucy Russell is properly attractive to play the film’s version of a femme fatale, but her acting is not particularly good. Noland and co-editor Gareth Heal give the film a quick pace, and the film is smart about allowing where in the timeline the scenes are supposed to be.
