Fifth about The Seventh

Chamada a Cobrar

Chamada a Cobrar: Anna Muylaert’s modest, tight film follows a woman of a certain age and class standing who receives a phone call from the alleged kidnapper of his young daughter. Much of what she does next seems implausible, but fear is indeed a powerful drive. How much is accepted of that implausibility depends on how sympathetic the character is, and the protagonist is flawed (for what little can be seen of her in such a short film), but not to an unacceptable level. Bete Dorgam plays her with palpable and convincing despair and naïveté; Pierre Santos, mostly just a voice on the phone, keeps the threat level and rhythm believable. Cinematographer Marcelo Trotta keeps the camera close when needed, showcasing all the urgency and tension of those moments, while also, at times, putting the lenses far away and neutral; that opposition is at the center of the drama.
