Wake Up Dead Man

Wake Up Dead Man: Rian Johnson`s whodunit franchise returns to good form; this time around, the Southern detective (played with glee and levity by Daniel Craig) investigates a murder that happened in a small New York State church with a dark story. The gallery of characters is reasonably colourful, starting with the Old Testament-style preacher who was killed in a seemingly impossible crime. Yes, there are some plot holes, but nothing that makes it any less entertaining. A good part of the entertainment value comes from the large and interesting cast. Josh Brolin plays the victim, an enraged, conservative preacher with a tendency to intimidate his flock. His counterpart, a caring young preacher and the film’s heart, is played rather nicely by Josh O’Connor. Jeffrey Wright is another member of the church, in an unfortunately short role. Glenn Close and Thomas Haden Church, among others, are part of the suspect corps. Production designer Rick Heinrichs creates a lovely yet sinister setting, and cinematographer Steve Yedlin has a lot of fun with the lighting to create the film’s mood.
