Fifth about The Seventh

Tripping With Nils Frahm

Tripping With Nils Frahm: Benoit Toulemonde’s concert film can be described simply as showcasing a world-class artist at work, creating beauty. For a layman, it’s hard to define the music of Nils Frahm, but it’s a mix of mellow electronic music with plenty of piano and piano-adjacent instruments. In any case, it’s hypnotic, particularly as one watches the sound being conjured out of thin air. Well, not quite out of thin air, but out of several instruments and many more equalizers, synthesizers, and whatnots. The music is beautiful in its own right, but the process is absolutely fascinating, as Frahm jumps from one keyboard to the next, raising levels and turning knobs to find the exact sound at any given moment. Director of photography Nils Frahm and six camera operators capture the show in a stunning Berlin venue, getting very close to the action, showing all the artist’s focus and intensity, as well as the public’s reaction. The editing, by Leslie Lagier, the director Toulemonde, Felix Grimm, and Frahm himself, is quite effective. The sound quality, needless to say, is exceptional. One’s mileage may vary regarding the music, as it may not be to everyone’s tastes, but the overall experience is magical.
