Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan: this wuxia actioner, by CHOR Yuen, follows a young woman who is sold to a brothel, has its brutal madam fall in love with her, and embarks on a path of vengeance. The story is simple enough, but entertaining; the action is beautifully choreographed, made all the more impressive by the colourful costume design. Lily Ho plays the protagonist with a good range of emotions, from despair to cold rage to playful seduction, and is credible in the fight scenes as well. Betty Pei Ti, as the antagonist, is quite effective playing the cold, controlling madam. YUEH Hua plays the policeman in charge of investigating the deaths. Director of photography CHU Chia-Hsin is inventive with his framing, using many elements of the production design in the foreground, which helps to make this a visually pleasant film to watch. The editing, by CHIANG Hsing-Lung and LI Yen-Hai, is fast and to the point.
