Fifth about The Seventh

Blue Moon (2025)

Blue Moon: Richard Linklater’s fictional account of the opening night of “Oklahoma!” in New York, from the perspective of Lorenz Hart, is a fine character study with sizzling dialogue. Hart is an interesting protagonist, a gnomish man always in need of some form of adoration, but whose questionable reliability in doing his job serves as an obstacle to continuing his partnership. He is played very effectively by Ethan Hawke; Bobby Cannavale plays the sympathetic, friendly bartender; Andrew Scott plays his old partner, Richard Rodgers; and Margaret Qualley plays his love interest. They all deal quite well with the fast-paced dialogue. The excessive number of easter eggs is a bit annoying, alas. The film mostly takes place in a limited space, the bar beautifully recreated by production designer Susie Cullen; director of photography Shane F. Kelly captures the action with an efficient, no-nonsense camera.
