Fifth about The Seventh

No Other Choice (Eojjeolsugaeopda)

No Other Choice: PARK Chan-wook’s film, a dark comedy thriller, tells the story of a man, a former manager of a paper company, who loses his job during a downsizing, and realizes he needs to eliminate his competition if he wants to land a new job to keep his house and his family’s standard of living. The protagonist’s ultimate goal is certainly relatable, even if his methods absolutely are not, and that combination makes for an engaging plot. The bumbling way he goes about his business makes this very entertaining. LEE Byung-hun’s performance as him is great, from his self-confidence early on to his doubts later; he is well matched by SON Ye-jin, who plays his efficient and loving wife. Cinematographer KIM Woo-hyung’s work is creative and dynamic, utilizing a few choice, peculiar shots to mix things up. The film loses some of its pace later on, but moment to moment, the work of editors KIM Sang-beom and KIM Ho-bin is solid. The musical score, by composer CHO Young-wuk, is quite good.
