The Square: this animated film, by KIM Bo-sol, would feel right at home if it had been a live-action film. The film is modest, with a quiet and delicate plot. It tells the story of a Swedish diplomat living in Pyongyang, where he starts an illicit relationship with a North Korean traffic guard. What follows is a simple story of loneliness and systemic paranoia, which gives the whole film melancholic overtones. Voice acting, by JEON Woon-jong, LEE Chan-yong, LEE Ga-young, and LEE You-jun, is solid. The music, by composer JEONG Yong-jin, is quite good. The animation is relatively simple; the environments are beautifully designed and lit, and the characters are nicely drawn and animated, while the protagonists are distinctive. It’s a nice journey.
