Love Letters (Des Preuves d’Amour)

Love Letters: Alice Douard’s drama tells the story of a woman whose wife is pregnant and who must navigate a bureaucratic process to adopt their daughter; the letters required for adoption force her to confront many questions about motherhood. Ella Rumpf makes for a fine protagonist, as a woman who seems to have a steeper challenge to achieve motherhood due to her own past; Monia Chokri, as her very pregnant wife, is also fine as a woman with her emotions much closer to the surface; Noémie Lvovsky plays the protagonist’s mother, a famed pianist and generally distant, but not unloving woman. Cinematographer Jacques Girault captures the action elegantly, with special attention to the protagonist’s face. The journey is emotional and, at times, very funny, making this a very nice experience.
