Fifth about The Seventh

Left-Handed Girl

Left-Handed Girl: TSOU Shih-ching’s delightful family drama follows a mother who moves back to Taipei with her two daughters, the lanky and angry college-aged oldest, and her lovely six-year-old youngest. The move is hard for all three: the mother struggles with money and her relationship with her family, the oldest daughter with her limited life perspective, and the youngest with the fact that she is left-handed, which is considered a curse by her traditionalist grandfather. The dynamics between the three, particularly the sisters, is touching and believable. MA Shih-yuan, who plays the angry sex-pot elder daughter, gives a wonderfully layered performance. The mother, lost with all the troubles she faces, is played nicely by Janel Tsai. Nina Ye is extra-cute as the smart younger kid. Cinematographers CHEN Ko-chin and KAO Tzu-hao’s work is dynamic, intimate, and colourful; it’s more impressive considering they captured the action with an iPhone. Editor Sean Baker (who is also a co-writer of the film with director Tsou) gives the film a nice, snappy, propulsive rhythm.
