Peak Everything: Anne Émond’s slightly melancholic romantic comedy follows a kennel owner who, depressed and anxious about climate change, falls in love with the customer support of a wellness contraption he purchased. The story doesn’t quite decide if it cares more about the love story or the cautionary tale, even if the protagonist is relatable in his midlife crisis. Patrick Hivon is fine in his portrayal, showing the character as a well of gentleness and worry; Piper Perabo, who plays his love interest, is warm and bright, which helps to explain his infatuation. Aesthetically, the film is generally unremarkable. That, however, may be an unfair response to the atrocious DCP (the distributor that provided it to São Paulo International Film Festival has a story about low-quality copies, alas), which had issues with low-light scenes and sound design throughout (making the work of cinematographer Olivier Gossot seem amateurish and the whole film, a work-in-progress).
