Fifth about The Seventh

Only Yesterday (Omohide Poro Poro)

Only Yesterday: this delicate and sweet film, by TAKAHATA Isao, tells the story of a woman who goes to the countryside for her vacations, which triggers many memories in her. Jumping back and forth between the time she was 10 and now that she is 27, the film builds a sweet, sympathetic protagonist who is still uncertain about her own place in the world. As such, she is also quite relatable. Both voice performers who portray her are quite good: HONNA Yooko in her younger version, and IMAI Miki in her older version. The animation is beautifully made, and deals with the dual narrative in an interesting visual way: while the present day uses saturated, vivid colours, the memories from decades ago are more muted, with the frames at times fading around their edges. In any case, the recreation of the rural locality is amazing, and the characters are rather well-designed, with the young version being particularly charming. The music, both the tracks composed by HOSHI Katsu and the other songs played, is very soothing and diverse.
